Speaking of Dan Janal’s book, here is a useful excerpt, especially for beginners, on Ready Position:

You must be in an athletic stance. Don’t stand like a tree. When you stand straigh, you limit your ability to run and move.

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your weight evenly distributed over both feet.
  • Bend your knees slightly, so you are flexible. How far you can bend depends on your body mechanics, but some bend is better than none.
  • Be ready to move to the ball at all times. Keep your eyes on the ball and be prepared to step in any direction to reach it.
